Berkley Flicker Shad Vs Rapala Shad Rap

The debate between the Berkley Flicker Shad Vs Rapala Shad Rap is one many an angler faces when it comes time to restock the tackle box. Both baits have found themselves near and dear to the hearts of walleye anglers and we would be lying if we said these baits haven’t resulted in tournament wins as well. Being two proven fish catchers it’s now time to take a closer look at the two shad-style baits and decide which one “fits your bill” – pun intended.

Rapala Shad Rap

The Rapala Shad Rap is certainly the more experienced of the two baits making its debut earlier then the Berkley Flicker Shad. The construction of the bait is made from premium balsa wood, which is what we think is one of the biggest differences the two baits. Constructed from balsa, the Shad Rap rises very naturally, which is a critical characteristic of an effective casting bait. The balsa construction allows the Shad Rap to naturally rise like a tired or wounded baitfish when you stop retrieving it.

Rapala_Shad_RapRapala Shad Rap Pros:

  • Classic “wounded baitfish” action
  • Great for both casting or trolling
  • Hand tuned and tank tested for out of the packaging performance

Berkley Flicker Shad

The Berkley Flicker Shad took the fishing world by storm when it arrived on the market providing anglers with a proven design, great performance and perhaps most importantly a great price. A fish catching bargain by any means, the Berkley Flicker Shad does require a little bit more tuning out of the box to get it to run perfectly straight, but once you dial it in it’s lights out! Compared to the Shad Rap, the Flicker Shad features a slightly tighter wobble giving it more of a fleeing action vs the wounded look from the Rapala option. In our opinion the Flicker Shad’s action is better suited for trolling applications. The Berkley Flicker Shad is also constructed from more of a plastic material which doesn’t give it rising action on the pause like you see from the Shad Rap.

berkley_flicker_shadBerkley Flicker Shad Pros:

  • Very affordable price at any size. $3.99 per bait
  • A great array of color patterns with metallic finishes for stained or dirty water
  • “Fleeing” action perfect for trolling multiple lines
  • Greater diving depths

Berkley Flicker Shad Vs Rapala Shad Rap

In summary, both the Berkley Flicker Shad and Rapala Shad raps provide plenty of fish catching ability. From walleyes to bass and pike, it’s tough to resist the tried and true shad profile these baits offers. What stands out to us with the Shad Rap is its premium construction made by a very well known bait maker in Rapala. By using balsa, the Shad Rap is a great casting or trolling option and it just flat out catches fish. We also love the fact that each bait is hand tuned saving precious time and headaches on the water – especially if you like to troll. With that being said the Berkley Flicker shad is a solid performer and a very attractive price. With a slightly different action, the Rapala Shad Rap is a great starting point for any fishing trip and is trusted by tournament fisherman as well as avid anglers.
